Obverse
The obverse of the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar displays the elegant design of Lady Liberty, created by George T. Morgan. In this portrait, Liberty is shown in left-profile, wearing a Phrygian cap with a coronet and laurel wreath intertwined in her hair. Surrounding her are 13 stars, representing the original U.S. colonies. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1881.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1881-S Morgan Dollar, Morgan’s rendition of the American bald eagle is displayed in front-facing relief. The eagle clutches arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both war and peace. Although the design does not include the national shield, the eagle is presented in a powerful stance, representing the strength and resilience of the nation. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
During 1881, several U.S. Mint locations produced the Morgan Dollar, including Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The San Francisco Mint led the production of circulation coins, striking the largest number of Morgan Dollars that year.
