Morgan Silver Dollars marked the return of silver dollar production at the U.S. Mint after a five-year break that started when the Seated Liberty Dollar ended in 1873. By 1881, the San Francisco Mint joined the Carson City, Philadelphia, and New Orleans Mints in producing the popular Morgan Dollar. Today, certified 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available to order from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The artistic work of George T. Morgan on the Liberty design received immediate praise, celebrated for its strong symbolism and fine detail. His version of Liberty represented the strength and optimism that reflected Americas rising influence during the late 1800s.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 1881-S Morgan Dollar Coins, Liberty is featured in left-profile relief, wearing a laurel wreath and a coronet with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait are 13 stars, symbolizing the original American colonies. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1881.
Reverse
The reverse of 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins shows Morgans classic heraldic eagle. The eagles wings are spread, and it holds arrows and an olive branch to reflect Americas strength and hope for peace. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
The 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available here are certified MS65+ by PCGS. A plus mark means these coins offer higher quality than standard MS65 coins, featuring rich luster, sharp detail, and only minor surface marks. The San Francisco Mint had the highest production that year, turning out 12,760,000 coins.
