The Morgan Silver Dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, was first minted by the United States Mint in 1878, with production lasting until 1904. The last coins were struck in 1921, making this dollar an essential part of American history that spans from the Reconstruction Era through the Gilded Age and into the early 20th century, including the lively Roaring 20s. At this moment, 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is shipped in a protective plastic flip. If you place a bulk order, coins will be supplied in groups of 20. All coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1881-S Morgan Dollar showcases a detailed left-profile image of Lady Liberty. Morgan is believed to have taken inspiration from Anna Willes Williams for this depiction. Liberty is portrayed wearing a Phrygian cap, with a laurel wreath and coronet crown. A circle of 13 stars surrounds her likeness. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1881.
Reverse
On the reverse side, the 1881-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin presents a heraldic eagle. This design diverges from traditional representations by omitting the national shield and instead showing the eagle in a front-facing stance with its wings wide open. The eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows in its talons, symbolizing peace and readiness for defense. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
In 1881, the United States Mint struck Morgan Silver Dollar coins at various branch mints throughout the country. The San Francisco Mint produced the largest quantity, with over 12.7 million coins, while the Philadelphia Mint contributed 9.16 million coins. The New Orleans Mint added 5.7 million coins, and the Carson City Mint produced 296,000 coins.
