The GSA Morgan Dollar coin has been a widely popular collector’s item ever since the discovery of the so-called “GSA Hoard of Morgans” in the Sixties, a supply of coins so vast that it permanently altered the collector’s market. These coins have been popular ever since, so much so that divergent schools of thought have even arisen about how best to package them. Some dealers prefer to use the original government packaging, while others — including the team at Provident Metals — prefer to rely on lightweight shipping in a simple but secure plastic slab that gives clients a chance to make their own decisions about display. The 1882-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is now available from Provident Metals.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab with a label to indicate its certified NGC grade!
  • Issued in 1882, struck at the Carson City Mint!
  • Has a weight of .7734 Troy oz 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Face value of $1 issued by the United States.
  • Obverse features an effigy of Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse features a classic heraldic eagle design.

This 1882-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin comes in a protective plastic slab labeled to indicate its certified NGC grade of MS64, which identifies it as attractive to the eye and showing a few scattered contact marks and hairline scratches. Provident Metals fully insures each shipment against any chance of loss or damage.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse side features a bust of Lady Liberty with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1882,” with thirteen decorative stars at the rim for each one of the Union’s founding states.

Reverse

The reverse features a heraldic eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

The story of the GSA Morgan silver dollar coin began with a rush on Morgan Silver Dollars in the early Sixties. Acting mostly as backing for silver certificates, these coins had lain undisturbed in federal Treasury vaults for generations until a craze for the silver dollar began in 1958, reaching a fever pitch around 1964. This was when uncirculated coins with rare and valuable dates, some still in their original mint bags, were discovered in an annual distribution. It led to a further craze for this coinage among collectors and investors, which ultimately led to the discovery of three million General Services Administration-issued Morgan Silver Dollars: the GSA Hoard of Morgans, coins mostly struck at the Carson City Mint. The supply would permanently change the face of coin collecting.
