Obverse

On the obverse of the 1882-S Morgan Dollar Coin, youll find the iconic image of Lady Liberty. The design, created by George T. Morgan, shows Liberty in left-profile wearing a Phrygian cap, with a wreath of laurel and a coronet, symbolizing freedom and honor. The inscriptions here include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1882.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1882-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin highlights Morgans heraldic eagle. This American eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both the strength to defend and a desire for peace. This version of the eagle appears without the usual shield, a distinctive element of the Morgan Dollar design. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.

History

In 1882, Morgan Silver Dollars were produced across several U.S. Mint locations. These coins, marked with an “S,” were struck in San Francisco, where 9.25 million coins were minted that year. The San Francisco Mints production was second only to the Philadelphia Mint, which issued 11.1 million coins. The New Orleans and Carson City Mints also contributed to the total mintage of 27.57 million Morgan Dollars that year.
