In the first years of Morgan Silver Dollar production, the United States Mint operated four branches to help mint coins for circulation across the nation. These branches were located in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. Right now, you can purchase 1882-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1882-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin in this offer is graded Mint State 66 by PCGS. Coins with this grade show stronger mint luster and only a few small contact marks. You may notice some light hairlines under magnification. San Francisco produced 9.25 million Morgan Dollars in 1882, the second-highest total among the four branches that year, following Philadelphias 11.1 million.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1882-S Morgan Dollar Coin, youll find George T. Morgans design of Liberty. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief wearing a Phrygian cap along with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. Around the portrait, there are 13 stars symbolizing the original colonies. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1882.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1882-S Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features a bald eagle in heraldic form. The eagle is shown with its wings spread wide, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons, representing both strength and peace. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar was created due to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. This law required the Treasury to buy large amounts of silver each month for coin production. It was a political compromise aimed at settling the ongoing argument between silver supporters in the West and gold standard advocates in the East.
