The Morgan Silver Dollar is a key element of American numismatic history, recognized for its stunning design and significance. Initially minted in 1878, the Morgan Dollar was produced every year until 1904, with a final release in 1921 following a 17-year pause in silver dollar production. Throughout its history, the US Mint operated branch facilities in cities such as Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Among these, the Carson City Morgan Dollars are especially sought after by collectors. Currently, you can find the 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available at Provident Metals.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1883-CC Morgan Dollar, you will find a beautiful representation of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan in 1878, this image displays Liberty in left-profile relief, adorned with a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet. Surrounding her are 13 stars, contributing to the coin’s rich symbolism. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1883.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features a notable rendition of the heraldic eagle, also designed by Morgan. This design showcases a bold bald eagle facing forward, with its wings extended, holding arrows of war in one talon and an olive branch representing peace in the other. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint.

History

The Carson City Mint was specifically established by the United States Mint to take advantage of local silver discoveries in the American West. From 1878 to 1885, it struck Morgan Dollars each year. After a three-year break from 1886 to 1888, it resumed production in 1889 and continued to mint Morgan Dollars until it closed its doors permanently in 1893. In 1883, the Carson City Mint produced 1,204,000 coins, which was the smallest output among the four active branch mints that year.
