Within the field of Morgan Dollar collecting there are a group of coins known as GSA Morgan Dollars. These coins are largely made up of Carson City Mint issues from the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s, and spent nearly a century sitting in US Treasury vaults rather than being distributed into circulation. The hoard of coins was discovered in the 1960s by the Treasury and later auctioned off to the public by the Government Services Administration, or GSA. Today, you have the chance to buy 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins with a GSA box and Certificate of Authenticity online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
As was often the case with Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint, the 1883 production numbers for the silver dollar the Nevada-based mint were much lower than those from its counterparts. For example, the Philadelphia Mint led the way in 1883 by coining a total of 12.29 million Morgan Dollars. The New Orleans Mint had the second-highest total at 8.725 million, followed by the San Francisco Mint at 6.25 million.
Obverse
On the obverse of 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is a vision of Lady Liberty. Created by George T. Morgan with Anna Willess Williams sitting as his portrait model, Liberty is shown with a coronet in her hair bearing an inscription of Liberty and also has a wreath crown upon her head. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read E Pluribus Unum and 1883.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1883-CC Morgan Dollar comes with an image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design was created by Morgan as well and features the bald eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar. The CC mint mark is present on this side as well.
History
Of the 1,204,000 coins the Carson City Mint issued in 1883, some 755,000 of those coins wound up sitting in US Treasury vaults for decades. The coins were discovered there in the 1960s as part of a hoard of uncirculated Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars. Carson City date marks from the series made up 95% of the hoard of coins the Treasury discovered. The Government Services Administration later auctioned off the coins to the American public.
