In the 1880s, the number of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins struck by the United States Mint at its Carson City branch facility did not end up representing the number of coins that made it into circulation from that mint. It wasnt until the 1960s that the US Treasury discovered a vast store of Morgan Dollar Silver Coins from the 19th century sitting in its vaults. 95% of those coins were uncirculated Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars. Right now, you can get 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals with the original GSA plastic holder.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a hard plastic holder courtesy of the GSA!
  • 6th year of issue for Morgan Dollar Silver Coins!
  • Initial mintage of just 1,204,000 silver dollars!
  • Contains .77344 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) fully backed by the American government.
  • On the obverse is an effigy of Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse showcases the heraldic eagle.

With your purchase of an 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin in this product listing at Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that remains in its original inner packaging from the Government Services Administration. After the discovery of the hoard of Morgan Dollars in Treasury vaults, the GSA was brought in to audit and later auction the coins. The auctioned-off coins were packed in hard plastic holders. Though all coins were also placed in presentation boxes with a Certificate of Authenticity, for most of the remaining coins in the 21st century, these hard plastic holders are all that is available from the original GSA packaging.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1883 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is Lady Liberty. George T. Morgan created this image in the styling of Classical Antiquity artwork as was common in the 19th century. Liberty is featured in left-profile relief with a coronet and wreath crown. Her bust is surrounded by 13 stars in total with E Pluribus Unum above, Liberty, on the coronet, and 1883 below.

Reverse

The reverse side of 1883-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. This image was also designed by Morgan and shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief without the US national shield. The design does, however, show the eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The image includes inscriptions of United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar, and the Carson City Mints CC mint mark.

History

The 1880s saw the highest percentage of Carson City Mint-issued Morgan Dollars end up in Treasury vaults rather than in circulation. For example, from 1881 to 1885, more than half of the original mintage of Morgan Dollars at the Carson City Mint skipped circulation and went straight to the US Treasury vaults. In 1883, 755,000 coins from the original 1.204 million wound up sitting in Treasury vaults to be discovered and later auctioned by the GSA.
