Obverse

Liberty is featured on the obverse side of 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels. This design was created in 1883 by Charles E. Barber and shows Liberty in left-profile relief. She wears a coronet crown and a laurel wreath on her head. There are 13 stars around the field of the coin. The inscriptions include the word LIBERTY on the coronet and the date mark of 1883 at the bottom.

Reverse

In the reverse design of the 1883 Liberty Head V Nickel, you will find the Roman numeral V, an indication of the five-cent value of the coin. This is surrounded by a wreath and the inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

History

These 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels are unique in that they come from the early issues in 1883. You can tell this fact by the lack of the word CENTS at the bottom of the reverse design field. After initially issuing the coins without the word CENTS to build upon the Roman numeral V on the reverse, the mint would move by June 1883 to add the word CENTS to the coins and would continue doing so through 1912.
