One of the earliest five-cent piece designs in the United States was the Liberty Head V Nickel. Produced from 1883 to 1912, this coin was just the second design in the US Nickel series and was part of the successor series to the historic US Half Dime. Today, you can get 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels online from Provident Metals in certified condition.
Highlights:
Prior to the release of the first US Nickel with a copper-nickel alloy, the US Mint issued the silver Half Dime, a five-cent coin with 90% silver content. The Half Dime disappeared from circulation during the Civil War as the intrinsic value of its silver far exceeded the face value. In 1866, US Nickels were introduced and, in 1883, the Liberty Head design debuted.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 1883 Liberty Head V Nickels, you will find a portrait of Lady Liberty. This bust of Liberty comes with left-profile relief and includes both the laurel wreath and coronet crowns on her head. The field offers a ring of 13 stars with inscriptions of 1883 and the word LIBERTY on the coronet.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 1883 Liberty Head V Nickel comes with an image of a Roman numeral V at the center. This is surrounded by a wreath with additional inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and CENTS.
History
The Liberty Head Nickel was designed in 1883 by the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Charles E. Barber. This design initially lacked the word CENTS on the reverse, a move that was made based on the assumption Americans would know the V indicating the five-cent value. In June 1883, the US Mint altered the design of the reverse to add the word CENTS.
