The Morgan Silver Dollar remains one of the most well-known American coins ever made for everyday use. Created by George T. Morgan, the coin first appeared in 1878 and continued to be produced until 1904. In 1883, a wide range of Morgan Dollars was released, including proof and circulation strikes from Philadelphia, with circulation coins also minted in Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Right now, certified 1883 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1883 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin offered here holds a Mint State 63 grade. Coins at this level show light wear, some small contact marks, and a few noticeable hairlines, but still offer good luster overall. In 1883, the Philadelphia Mint produced the largest number of Morgan Dollars compared to the other locations.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1883 Morgan Dollar Coin features George T. Morgans take on Liberty. In this design, Liberty is presented with flowing hair and a relaxed, confident expression, offering a fresh look compared to earlier, more formal interpretations. Inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1883.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1883 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, you will find a heraldic eagle designed by Morgan. The eagle is shown with wings lifted, surrounded below by a wreath. It holds arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
Anna Willess Williams, a teacher from Philadelphia, was the model for Liberty on the Morgan Dollar. She sat for several sessions so Morgan could capture her likeness. Though she became known as the “Silver Dollar Girl,” Williams generally stayed out of the public eye.
