The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most famous coins ever produced for circulation in the United States. Designed by George T. Morgan, it first appeared in 1878 and was minted each year through 1904. In 1883, the Morgan Dollar was struck in five versions, with proof and circulation coins issued from Philadelphia, and additional circulation strikes from Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Today, certified 1883 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1883 Morgan Dollar Coin features George T. Morgans portrait of Liberty. Her hair flows freely beneath her cap, and her strong profile brings a fresh, distinctly American look compared to the older, European-influenced designs on earlier U.S. coins. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1883.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1883 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, youll find Morgans heraldic eagle. The bald eagle is shown with its wings stretched upward, holding arrows and an olive branch to represent the countrys readiness for both war and peace. A wreath frames the eagle from below. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

The Morgan Dollar showcases one of the most beloved images of Liberty, featuring her left-facing profile wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with cotton and wheat. These symbols reflect Americas agricultural tradition. Morgan used a real model for this designAnna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher, whose features he believed best represented classical beauty.
