On the obverse of 1883-O Morgan Silver Dollars, youll see a bust of Lady Liberty. Shown from the neck-up in the neo-classical tradition, Ms. Liberty faces left and wears a Phrygian cap. Designed by George T. Morgan, this obverse also includes inscriptions reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1883.

The reverse of these Morgan Silver Dollar Coins shows a bald eagle with arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This classic design is accompanied by a pair of laurels tied together with a ribbon. The reverse also bears the New Orleans mintmark along with inscriptions reading UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR.

The Bland-Allison Act of 1878 authorized the United States to begin producing Silver Dollars for the first time in five years. The director of the mint Henry Linderman saw an opportunity to re-design the countrys Silver Dollar, which had previously featured the Seated Liberty engraving from Christian Gobrecht. Linderman ultimately chose the designs of George T. Morgan, who at the time was the mints Assistant Engraver. Morgan would eventually become the 7th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
