Obverse

The obverse side of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar Coin features Lady Liberty in an elegant left-profile relief. Morgan used Anna Willes Williams as the model for Libertys image. She is depicted with a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. Encircling her image are 13 stars, representing the original states of the nation. The inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1883.

Reverse

On the reverse side, the 1883-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin displays the heraldic eagle, which is presented without a national shield. The eagle is shown in a front-facing position with its wings outstretched. Its talons hold both the arrows of war and an olive branch, symbolizing the duality of conflict and peace. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.

History

In 1883, four circulation versions of the Morgan Dollar were issued, along with a limited number of proof coins produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The New Orleans Mint struck 8.725 million coins in 1883, making it the second-highest mintage after Philadelphia’s 12.29 million coins. Additionally, the San Francisco Mint produced 6.25 million coins, and the Carson City Mint issued 1.2 million coins.
