The 1884 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin offers a glimpse into the varied mintage practices of the late 19th century. That year, the San Francisco Mint produced over 900,000 coins, while the Carson City Mint issued just 81,139, making the 1884-CC coin a lower-mintage release favored by collectors. Provident Metals now offers the 1884-CC $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin online.
Highlights:
These 1884-CC $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available in About Uncirculated 55 condition. This grade reflects minimal wear, with traces of friction and considerable original luster still present.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1884-CC $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin displays a profile image of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, this effigy shows Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet engraved with the word Liberty. Around her are thirteen stars, representing the original American colonies. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1884.
Reverse
Flipping the 1884-CC Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin over, the reverse design shows the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, signifying strength and peace. As a Type III coin, this version includes the motto In God We Trust and a revised layout for the denomination. The inscriptions read IN GOD WE TRUST, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the CC mint mark.
History
Carson Citys production run of Double Eagles was limited but notable, with minting occurring between 1870 and 1893. The facilitys location in Nevada placed it near rich gold sources, which helped supply the mint with the raw materials used to strike these coins.
