The importance of the Morgan silver dollar in the modern collector’s market dates back to the discovery of a long-forgotten hoard of coins in the vaults of the US Treasury in the 1960s. Comprising some three million uncirculated coins, this historic discovery changed the face of coin collecting and transformed the Morgan silver collar from an almost prohibitively rare find into a sought-after coin that was within reach of the everyday collector. Some of the most numerous coins in what became known as the GSA Hoard of Morgans were those struck at the Carson City Mint in the early 1880s, one example being the 1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin now on offer for online purchase from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
This 1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin ships in a protective plastic slab with a label that verifies a certified grade from the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), the world’s leading third-party grading service. Its grade of MS63, or Mint State 63, means it is fairly attractive to the eye despite a slightly impaired luster, numerous small contact marks, and hairline scratches, and a couple of large marks potentially appearing in prime focal areas.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse sign features an effigy of Lady Liberty and carries the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1884,” along with thirteen decorative stars at the rim (one for each of the Union’s founding states).
Reverse
The reverse side features a heraldic eagle with talons clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The GSA Hoard of Morgans is not the only coin hoard to be discovered over the years, but it is by orders of magnitude the largest and most publicly famous find of the Twentieth Century. The astonishing hoard, uncovered in part due to a rise in demand for the silver dollar starting in the late Fifties, was entrusted to a normally obscure government agency known as the General Services Administration or GSA, which organized and packaged some three million coins for auctions in multiple years in the Seventies and early Eighties. The most numerous pieces in the hoard were those struck at the storied Carson City Mint in the early 1880s, and their market value has appreciated over the years since.
