The 1884 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin from the Carson City Mint is one of the more prominent coins from this 19th-century series still available to collectors today. This fact has less to do with its original mintage of 1.136 million coins and more to do with how many of those were discovered in the GSA Hoard in the 1960s. Today, you have the opportunity to get certified 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.

The GSA Hoard refers to the millions of Carson City Mint Morgan Dollar Silver Coins discovered in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s. The Government Services Administration audited the hoard to get an accurate count of the total by dates in the series at the Carson City Mint. The coins were then packaged and sold to collectors through auctions starting in the early 1970s.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is a bust of Liberty. This left-profile portrait shows Liberty with a Phrygian cap at the back of her head, and the coronet and laurel wreath in her hair. 13 stars accompany her effigy on this side of the coin, with six to the front of Libertys face around the edge of the coin and seven stars behand her face. Inscriptions on this side include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY on the coronet, and the date mark of 1884.

Reverse

The reverse field of the 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes with an image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Designed in 1878 along with the obverse image, this shows the bald eagle with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. There is a wreath of oak and laurel around the eagle, as well as inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint.

History

Most of the existing 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available to collectors today come from the GSA Hoard. From the original mintage of 1,136,000 coins, an astonishing 84.7% were discovered in Treasury vaults in the 1960s. This amounts to 962,638 coins in total.
