The Morgan Silver Dollar Series launched in 1878 at the United States Mint, designed by engraver George T. Morgan. These coins featured new depictions of Liberty and the American bald eagle, marking the revival of silver dollar production after a short pause. The Morgan Dollar was issued every year from 1878 to 1904, then one last time in 1921 after World War I. Right now, 1884 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available in certified condition at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1884 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins have earned a Mint State 65 grade, which means they have strong mint luster for their age. You may spot a few minor contact marks, with the possibility of one or two slightly larger marks and small areas with fine hairlines.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1884 Morgan Dollar Coin features a portrait of Lady Liberty, created by Morgan. Shown in left-profile, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap decorated with a laurel wreath and a coronet. Thirteen stars ring the edge of the coin, standing for the original colonies. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1884.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1884 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin displays Morgans image of the heraldic eagle. The eagle is shown with its wings spread out wide, holding arrows and an olive branch in its claws. A wreath surrounds the lower half of the design, and the national motto appears above the eagle. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
George T. Morgans commitment to his work as an engraver played a key role in shaping American coinage. He lectured often on the art of medals and guided younger engravers at the Mint, helping to build an American tradition in coin design that carried into the 20th century.
