The famed “Morgan dollar” silver coin was first minted between the years 1878 and 1904, and went on to become one of the most consistently sought-after American coins, particularly where available in uncirculated quality and with an unusual mint mark. The New Orleans Mint’s silver dollars are, for example, relatively rare in comparison to Morgans produced elsewhere, sometimes called the “lost Morgans” because of how difficult it can be to acquire them. One of the most widely available mintages with the “O” mint mark comes from 1884, when almost 10 million such coins were produced. The 1884-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is now available for online purchase from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1884-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin ships in a secure, tamper-proof plastic holder with a label showing its certified grade. Mint State 64 (or MS/64) indicates a coin of average luster and strike with scattered scuffs, hairline scratches, and contact marks — a few of which may turn up in prime focal areas — and an attractive eye appeal. Every shipment is fully insured by the Provident Metals team.
Obverse
An effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap appears on the obverse side, alongside the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1884” and thirteen decorative stars at the rim.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle dominates the reverse side, its talons clasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, accompanied by the “O” mint mark and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
Designed by and named for the famous engraver George T. Morgan, the Morgan dollar was known for its rich silver content, visually stunning design, and unusual size. It was popular among the pioneers and prospectors, outlaws and settlers of the America “Wild West,” and its reputation led to commemorative strikings in both 1921 and 2021 even as the original coins grew increasingly scarce and sought-after by collectors. The New Orleans Mint’s 1884 output survived intact in greater numbers than some other years of the long-lost branch mint’s output, thanks to a substantial number of uncirculated coins being preserved in Treasury bags for years before they were rediscovered.
