The Morgan Silver Dollar was first introduced in 1878, signaling the return of silver dollar production in the United States after a five-year break. Created by George T. Morgan, the series featured fresh designs of Liberty and the bald eagle. Morgan Dollars were minted every year from 1878 through 1904, with a final issue in 1921 after a long pause. Today, you can purchase certified 1884-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Coin Highlights:
These 1884-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins have earned a Mint State 65 grade. The coins offer solid mint luster, along with a few minor contact marks. You may notice one or two larger marks or small groups of hairlines as well.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1884-O Morgan Dollar Coin, you will see George T. Morgans portrait of Liberty. She faces left wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a crown inscribed with “Liberty.” The design is surrounded by 13 stars to represent the original colonies. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1884.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1884-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins highlights the heraldic eagle. In this image, a small bald eagle appears with its wings lifted. The eagle is shown grasping arrows and an olive branch in its talons, representing strength and peace. A wreath wraps around the lower design, and the national motto appears overhead. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
George T. Morgan came to America from England in 1876 after being recruited by U.S. Mint Director Henry Linderman to create new American coin imagery. Before his arrival, Morgan had built his skills at the Royal Mint in London under the tutelage of famous engraver William Wyon.
