“Morgan dollar” silver coins from the Carson City Mint are some of the most important coins in the iconic Morgan series. One of the rarest of these coins was struck in low numbers in the year 1885, but fortunately, a large percentage of that relatively tiny mintage survived in the US Treasury’s vaults to be discovered as part of a major hoard that was auctioned onto the collectors’ market in the 1970s and 1980s, making the date more obtainable than before. Provident Metals now offers the 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin for online purchase in this grade.

Highlights:

  • Comes in a tamper-proof protective plastic slab, labeled to show its certified NGC grade of Mint State 63!
  • Struck in 1885 at the Carson City Mint!
  • Contains 0.7734 Troy oz of Silver, comprised of 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Single dollar face value backed by the United States government.
  • The obverse field features Lady Liberty in effigy.
  • The reverse field features a heraldic eagle.

The 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin ships in a secure plastic slab, fully insured against loss or damage and carrying a label to confirm its NGC-certified grade of Mint State 63. This grade indicates a coin with an average strike and luster that shows only moderate marks or hairline scratches.

Obverse

The coin’s obverse field features Lady Liberty in a profile effigy, wearing a Phrygian cap and accompanied by the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1885.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim represent each of America’s founding states.

Reverse

A heraldic eagle dominates the reverse field, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. It’s accompanied by the “CC” mint mark and the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

History

In 1885, the Carson City Mint issued a mintage of just 228,000 Morgan dollars: the last such coins it would strike until 1889, and a tiny mintage compared to the millions of such coins coming out of other branch mints across America. For decades, a starkly limited supply of these coins made the 1885-CC something of a key date for the Morgan series, until it was discovered that some 65 percent of the total mintage had survived in a previously undiscovered hoard of Morgans that came to light in the 1960s. Even though that survival made these coins relatively easy to obtain in uncirculated grade, they remain premium collectors’ items.
