The 1885 date mark in the Morgan Dollar Series struck at the Carson City Mint was notable on a number of levels. 1885 marked the lowest mintage of Morgan Dollars at the mint, as well as the last year the Carson City Mint would strike the coins until 1889 when the mint briefly resumed its role striking the silver dollar coins. Provident Metals now has 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available to you for purchase online with original GSA packaging.
Highlights:
When you purchase these 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals, you receive a coin that still has its original GSA packaging from the auctions of the 1970s and early 1980s. The coins are packaged inside of the original hard plastic holder with a presentation box and a Certificate of Authenticity included.
Obverse
The obverse side of 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins comes with a bust of Liberty. This portrait of Lady Liberty includes a coronet with Liberty inscribed, a wreath crown on her head, and a cap at the back of her head holding up much of her hair. A few curly strands run down the side of her head as 13 stars flank her portrait. Inscriptions include E Pluribus Unum and 1885.
Reverse
On the reverse face of 1885 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design was also created by George T. Morgan and includes an American bald eagle in front-facing relief as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The design field includes inscriptions of United States of America, In God We Trust, and One Dollar. The CC mint mark is present on this side beneath the tail feathers of the eagle and above the letter D in the word dollar.
History
The 1885-CC Morgan Dollar was the last release of the silver dollars by the Carson City Mint before a three-year halt in coining. The mint did not issue any coins again until 1889 and then issued the coins through 1893 before closing. The 1885 release was the lowest in the mints history, but more than 60% of that original release wound up spending decades inside US Treasury vaults. The GSA found 148,300 of the original 238,000 coins sitting in Treasury vaults, boosting the volume of this once-rare date available to collectors.
