The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was the last US silver dollar widely produced in both large volumes and over the course of several decades. The original coins from the Morgan Dollar Series in the 1870s and 1880s are some of the hardest to find, particularly those from the Carson City Mint. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals with GSA packaging.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a hard plastic holder courtesy of the GSA!
  • 8th coin and final year of consecutive coining at the Carson City Mint!
  • Limited mintage of just 238,000 silver dollars!
  • Contains .77344 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is backed by the United States of America.
  • On the obverse is a depiction of Liberty.
  • The reverse field comes with an image of the heraldic eagle.
  • Bears a CC mint mark from the Carson City Mint.

The Carson City Mint was established as a US Mint branch facility in 1863, but did not begin striking coins until 1870. In 1878, it started coining the Morgan Dollars when the new series launched as one of the first branch mints to issue the coins. The Carson City Mint would operate from 1870 to 1885 and again, briefly, from 1889 to 1893. The suspension of activity at the mint in 1886 resulted in the end of the Carson City Mints consecutive coining of Morgan Dollars following the debut of the series in 1878.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins is an image of Liberty. This depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief comes with a cap on her head, a wreath crown, and a coronet with the word Liberty inscribed on it. There are 13 stars on this side, along with inscriptions of E Pluribus Unum and 1885.

Reverse

The reverse face of the 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Coins includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. This version of the national emblem was created by Morgan and lacks the US national shield. The front-facing bald eagle is shown with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this field read United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint. The mint mark is located above the letter D in dollar and beneath the tail feathers of the eagle.

History

Each year that the Carson City Mint issued Morgan Dollars, it released the fewest number of coins. In the 1960s, it was discovered that many of the Carson City Mints coins went direct from the mint to US Treasury vaults. These uncirculated coins were discovered in the 1960s, audited by the Government Services Administration, and later auctioned to the public in the 1970s and 1980s.

Ordering

1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available here with GSA packaging that includes the original hard plastic holder. The GSA found that 95% of the $3 million in Morgan Dollars in Treasury vaults were from the Carson City Mint. Of the 238,000 coins issued in 1885, 148,300 were still sitting in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s having never been circulated.
