The Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was released for the first time in 1878. The coins were initially struck by three mints in 1878, with a fourth mint joining in 1879 in the form of the New Orleans Mint. The Carson City Mint issued the coins for the first eight years of availability before enduring a three-year pause. Coins from the Carson City Mint are some of the lowest minted in the series. Today, you have the chance to get certified 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
When the Carson City Mint began issuing Morgan Dollars in 1878, it did so alongside the Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint. In 1879, the New Orleans Mint began striking the coins as well. Until 1904, those three mints would continue striking the coins each year. In 1885, the Carson City Mint issued the coins for the final time in its original run, with no new coins issued in 1886, 1887, or 1888. From 1889 to 1893, the Carson City Mint would once again strike the coins until it was closed after 1863.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is a depiction of Liberty. This effigy shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap at the back of her head. She also wears a coronet and laurel wreath, with LIBERTY engraved on the coronet. There are 13 stars in the design field with additional inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1885.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1885-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins comes with a vision of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The bald eagle is set in front-facing relief clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The bird is surrounded by inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR. There is a CC mint mark on this side of the coin located above the D in DOLLAR and below the talons of the eagle.
History
Morgan Dollar Silver Coins from the Carson City Mint have a unique history. Beyond striking the coins in two different periods, most of the coins it produced never went into circulation. The majority of the Carson City Mints coins ended up in US Treasury vaults to back US Silver Certificates. Of the 238,000 1885-dated Morgans, 148,300 ended up sitting in Treasury vaults and were not discovered until the 1960s.
