The Morgan Silver Dollar, crafted by George T. Morgan, was first minted in 1878 and produced annually until 1904, with a final mintage in 1921. This coin circulated during important historical periods in U.S. history, including the Reconstruction Era and the early 20th century. Right now, 1885 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available through Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1885 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin comes to you in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, housed in a protective plastic flip for safe handling. If you buy multiples of 20 coins, they will be packaged in tubes. These coins are made with a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper, offering both historical and intrinsic value.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1885 Morgan Dollar, Lady Liberty is depicted in a detailed left-facing profile. Many believe that George T. Morgan used Anna Willes Williams as the model for this design. Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, laurel wreath, and a coronet, with a circle of 13 stars surrounding her image. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1885.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1885 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features the image of a heraldic eagle. In Morgans design, the eagle is shown without the usual national shield. Instead, it is displayed with wings outstretched, holding both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons, symbolizing strength and diplomacy. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The 1885 Morgan Dollar had one of the highest production runs in the series. This particular release saw coins minted at several U.S. Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. Philadelphia took the lead with more than 17.78 million coins struck, nearly double the mintage of the next highest location.
