In the 1880s, the mintage of Morgan Silver Dollars reached unprecedented heights within the series. Among the mints involved in production during that decade, the New Orleans Mint played a significant role, consistently ranking second each year and throughout the entire period, closely following the Philadelphia Mint. Today, Provident Metals offers you the opportunity to own certified 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online.
Highlights:
All 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available in Mint State 64 condition. Coins with this grade exhibit average mint luster for their age, displaying several small contact marks grouped together, as well as one or two moderate marks. Additionally, you may find one or two small patches of hairlines.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar features a captivating image of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Designed by George T. Morgan, this portrayal presents Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap, along with a laurel wreath and coronet crown in her hair. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1885.
Reverse
On the reverse side, you’ll find the heraldic eagle of the United States, also designed by Morgan. This striking design depicts an eagle facing forward, clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
Over the course of the 1880s, the mintage of Morgan Dollars at the Philadelphia and New Orleans branch mints, in particular, would grow with each year and peak near the end of the decade. In total, the New Orleans Mint issued roughly 91.028 million Morgan Dollars across the decade, with its highest single-year total coming in 1888.
