The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic coins ever produced by the United States Mint. First issued in 1878, it replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar and brought silver dollar coining back after a five-year break. Designed by Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, this series was minted annually until 1904 and had a one-time issue in 1921. Right now, 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available in perfect condition at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin offered here is housed in a protective plastic slab to ensure its Mint State 66 grade is preserved. Coins in this grade feature strong luster, minimal contact marks, and only a few hairlines or light scuffs visible under magnification.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar Coin features Lady Liberty, portrayed in left-profile relief by George T. Morgan. She wears a Phrygian cap with a laurel wreath and coronet crown. The design is surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original colonies. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1885.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, Morgans heraldic eagle design is featured. The bald eagle holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons, symbolizing the balance between strength and peace. The O mint mark, indicating the coins origin at the New Orleans Mint, is located below the eagle. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
The 1885-O Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint, with a total mintage of 9.185 million coins. This was second only to the Philadelphia Mint, which produced over 17.7 million coins that year. Additional coins came from San Francisco and Carson City, with much smaller mintages of 1.497 million and 238,000, respectively.
