The Morgan Silver Dollar was first introduced by the United States Mint in 1878. Designed by George T. Morgan, it became a key part of American coinage, produced annually until 1904 and again in 1921. These coins have circulated through some important moments in U.S. history, including the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era. Today, Provident Metals offers the 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin for your collection.
Highlights:
The 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins offered here are in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, ensuring they remain in excellent shape. Each coin is shipped in protective plastic flips, with larger orders potentially shipped in tubes of 20 coins if available. These silver coins are a great option for both collectors and investors.
Obverse
The obverse design of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar Coin shows a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap along with a laurel wreath and coronet. George T. Morgan is said to have based this image on Anna Willes Williams. Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars, symbolizing the original American colonies. Inscriptions here read LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1885.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, the American bald eagle is depicted with wings outstretched, holding arrows and an olive branch. This design, created by George T. Morgan, is unique in that the eagle is shown without the typical national shield found on other U.S. coins. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
In 1885, the United States Mint struck Morgan Silver Dollars at four different locations: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City. The New Orleans Mint issued 9.185 million coins that year, the second-highest mintage after Philadelphia. These coins are made of 90% silver and 10% copper, providing both historical value and precious metal content.
