Obverse

The obverse of the 1886 Morgan Dollar Coin displays a left-facing image of Lady Liberty. It is said that George T. Morgan used Anna Willes Williams as a model for his design. Liberty is adorned with a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath, and she is crowned with a coronet. The portrait is surrounded by 13 stars, each representing one of the original American colonies. Inscriptions here include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1886.

Reverse

On the reverse side, the 1886 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin showcases a heraldic eagle with wings fully spread. Morgans design for the eagle does not feature a shield but instead shows the bird clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing the nation’s balance between readiness for war and a desire for peace. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

In 1886, the production of Morgan Silver Dollars was significant, with over 19.96 million coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint alone. The New Orleans Mint produced 10.71 million coins, and the San Francisco Mint added another 750,000 coins. This was also the first year the Carson City Mint did not produce any Morgan Dollars.
