The United States Nickel has been available since 1866, with the second design element used in the series being the Liberty Head V Nickel. The coin is so-named because the obverse bears a depiction of Lady Liberty and the reverse features a Roman numeral V to identify the face value of the coin. Right now, you can buy 1887 Liberty Head V Nickels in certified condition online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
With your purchase of the 1887 Liberty Head V Nickel Coin online at Provident Metals, you will receive a coin that is sealed in a plastic slab and comes with a Mint State 63 grade. Coins in this condition exhibit impaired mint luster with several clusters of small contact marks, a few heavier marks scattered throughout the field, and small hairlines that may be visible without magnification.
Obverse
Lady Liberty features on the obverse of 1887 Liberty Head V Nickels. This design from Charles E. Barber shows Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown on her head, as well as a laurel wreath crown. There is a ring of 13 stars around the design element, with 1887 inscribed at the base of the field and LIBERTY inscribed on the coronet.
Reverse
A Roman numeral V is shown at the center of the 1887 Liberty Head Nickel. Also designed by Charles E. Barber, this design offers a large V in the center that is encircled by a wreath. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and CENTS.
History
Charles E. Barber designed the images featured on the Liberty Head Nickel. When he created the design, he was in the early years of his tenure as the 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. His Liberty Head design followed the Shield Nickel design, a coin design that proved exceptionally tough for the US Mint to strike. It would be followed by James Earle Frasers 1913 Buffalo Nickel redesign.
