History

Charles E. Barber designed the images featured on the Liberty Head Nickel. When he created the design, he was in the early years of his tenure as the 6^th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. His Liberty Head design followed the Shield Nickel design, a coin design that proved exceptionally tough for the US Mint to strike. It would be followed by James Earle Frasers 1913 Buffalo Nickel redesign.
