Today, you have the chance to buy 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online in certified condition at Provident Metals.

Obverse

Featuring on the obverse of the 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar is a left-facing relief of Lady Liberty. The design highlights Liberty’s head donning the coronet and laurel wreath crowns, while the outer edge of the design field is embellished with a ring of 13 stars. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1887.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1887 Morgan Dollar presents an image of the heraldic eagle, a design also crafted by Morgan. This representation showcases the bald eagle in a front-facing relief, carrying the symbols of war and peace. Notably, the design departs from the traditional depiction by excluding the US national shield. The inscriptions on this face include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

George T. Morgan was born on November 24, 1845, in Bilston, Staffordshire, England. He began his career as an apprentice to a die-sinker and later studied at the Birmingham School of Art. Morgan immigrated to the United States in 1876 and joined the United States Mint in Philadelphia as an assistant engraver.

Ordering

These 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are Mint State 63 specimens. Coins with this grade have impaired mint luster and the possibility of flaws such as clusters of contact marks, smaller clusters of heavy marks, and noticeable hairlines.
