Morgan Silver Dollars were first issued by the United States Mint in 1878, bringing silver dollar production back after a five-year gap caused by the cancellation of the Seated Liberty Dollar in 1873. In 1887, the Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints all struck Morgan Dollars. Right now, you can find 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in certified condition at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab!
  • 10th coin in the Morgan Dollar Series!
  • Final mintage of 20,290,000 coins at Philadelphia!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a Grade of Mint State 65+ by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • Lady Liberty on the obverse.
  • Heraldic eagle on the reverse.

These 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available here in Mint State 65+ condition. The “+” designation means the coins are among the finest examples of MS65 grade, showing strong mint luster and only a few small contact marks. Out of 33,611,000 Morgan Dollars struck in 1887, the Philadelphia Mint accounted for 20,290,000, representing almost 61% of that years total production.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 1887 Morgan Dollar Coins, Liberty is shown in left-profile relief. She wears a Phrygian cap along with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown. Around her are 13 stars, honoring the original colonies of the United States. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1887.

Reverse

The reverse side of 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins shows Morgans heraldic eagle. This bald eagle design captures the bird with wings outstretched, holding the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, combining strength and peace in a single image. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

George T. Morgan crafted both sides of the Morgan Silver Dollar. His Liberty design signaled a fresh approach to American coin artistry, offering a more natural and American representation of Liberty. He included delicate features like detailed hair and a Phrygian cap to reflect freedom.
