Right now, 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available from Provident Metals.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 1887 Morgan Dollar Coin, there is a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty, which was inspired by the teacher Anna Willes Williams. Lady Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath, surrounded by 13 stars. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1887.

Reverse

The reverse design of the 1887 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin includes a heraldic eagle designed by George T. Morgan. This eagle is shown with its wings spread wide, holding an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing both peace and military strength, though it lacks the national shield seen in other designs. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

In 1887, nearly 33 million Morgan Dollars were minted. The Philadelphia Mint contributed 20.29 million coins, making up the majority of the mintage. Other contributions came from the New Orleans Mint, which struck 11.55 million coins, and the San Francisco Mint, which produced 1.77 million. The Carson City Mint was inactive during this year and did not produce any Morgan Dollars.
