Obverse

The obverse of the 1888 Morgan Dollar Coin features a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan in 1878, it showcases Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown in her hair. The field includes a date mark and 13 stars. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1888.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1888 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, you’ll find a stunning portrayal of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also designed by George T. Morgan, this version of the heraldic eagle showcases the American bald eagle in a forward-facing pose. The eagle spreads its wings and firmly grasps both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

A total of three mints issued the Morgan Silver Dollar in 1888. In addition to these Philadelphia Mint specimens, the coins were struck in the American West as well by the San Francisco Mint and in the American South at the New Orleans Mint.

Ordering

All of our 1888 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are certified Mint State 64 by NGC. Coins with this grade typically exhibit an average mint luster for their age, with a few minor contact marks and possibly one or two moderate marks. You might also notice one or two small patches of hairlines on the coin’s surface.
