Introducing the timeless charm of the Morgan Silver Dollar, one of the most cherished coins in American history. First minted in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar holds a special place as the second widely circulated US silver dollar design and the last with broad national circulation. You can now acquire certified 1888 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
In 1878, George T. Morgan’s design for the new US silver dollar took the stage. It replaced the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar and enjoyed a continuous 27-year run from 1878 to 1904, as well as a final strike in 1921.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1888 Morgan Dollar Coin features a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan in 1878, it showcases Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown in her hair. The field includes a date mark and 13 stars. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1888.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1888 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, you’ll find a stunning portrayal of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Also designed by George T. Morgan, this version of the heraldic eagle showcases the American bald eagle in a forward-facing pose. The eagle spreads its wings and firmly grasps both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
A total of three mints issued the Morgan Silver Dollar in 1888. In addition to these Philadelphia Mint specimens, the coins were struck in the American West as well by the San Francisco Mint and in the American South at the New Orleans Mint.
