Coins with this grade generally show appealing overall surfaces with much of their original mint luster still visible. Small contact marks may appear in groups, while one or two larger marks are possible as well. Light hairlines may also be present in isolated areas. The proof-like designation refers to coins with reflective fields and lightly frosted design elements.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1888-O Morgan Dollar Coin features George T. Morgans portrait of Liberty. Morgan used Philadelphia teacher Anna Willess Williams as inspiration for the design. Liberty is shown facing left while wearing a Phrygian cap and a crown displaying the word LIBERTY. Stars encircle the design, with the date positioned at the bottom of the coin. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1888.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1888-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin depicts the heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide. The eagle carries arrows and an olive branch in its talons, representing both strength and peace. This reverse design has become one of the defining images in classic American silver coinage and continues to be admired by collectors around the world. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.

History

The New Orleans Mint produced the 1888-O Morgan Dollar with a final mintage of 12,150,000 coins. Because of this strong production total, the date remains readily available for collectors today and is often selected by those assembling complete Morgan Dollar collections. Coins from New Orleans are especially appealing because of the mints unique role in American coin production during the late 19th century.
