Obverse

On the obverse side, the 1888-O Morgan Dollar Coin features a timeless design of Lady Liberty created by George T. Morgan. She is depicted in left-profile, wearing a Phrygian cap and a coronet crown with a laurel wreath. Around her, there are 13 stars symbolizing the original colonies, with the date mark below. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1888.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1888-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin showcases the heraldic eagle design. This American bald eagle has its wings spread wide, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other to represent both strength and peace. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.

History

The New Orleans Mint was a vital part of Morgan Dollar production from 1879 to 1904, missing only the first year of 1878 and the last year of 1921. The mint reopened after the Civil War in 1879 and struck coins consistently until its closure in 1909. In 1888, it minted 12.150 million Morgan Dollars, while Philadelphia led with over 19 million coins.
