Prior to 1964, silver certificates could be redeemed for their face value in silver dollars. These 1899 notes feature George Washington and are the final $2 denomination series in the large format. It was common for vintage large-format U.S. currency to feature exquisite artwork on both sides. These certificates, which have been graded by PMG, are no exception. Provident Metals now has certified 1899 $2 Silver Certificate Notes available to you for purchase online.

Note Highlights:

  • Includes a protective PMG currency sleeve!
  • Vintage large-format currency!
  • Final series of $2 large format silver certificates!
  • Issued a face value of $2 (USD) by the United States government.
  • Graded Choice Fine 15 by the Paper Money Guaranty.
  • A portrait of George Washington features on the obverse.
  • Denomination and obligation information appears in the reverse.

These $2 Silver Certificate Notes can be purchased at the click of a mouse and delivered right to your door. Provident Metals fully insures your order while in transit and delivers using nondescript packaging. Upon inspection, you will find your note housed in a clear plastic currency sleeve. Also featured is a label with the grading details from the Paper Money Guaranty. With a grade of Choice Fine 15, you can expect to find various signs of circulation, including several fold marks.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1899 Silver Certificate Notes, there is an effigy of George Washington. Youll also see allegorical illustrations of Mechanics and Agriculture beside this iconic portrait. The Treasury seal is a standard feature of paper currency and appears on the right side in blue ink. There is also text reading This certifies that there have been deposited in the Treasury of the United States of America two silver dollars payable to the bearer on demand.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1899 $2 Silver Certificates features obligation and denomination information. Youll see the denomination in the corners numerically. The obligation language is just below the center. There are also beautiful decorative patterns extending along the edges and in the middle of the field.

History

Silver certificates offered investors a convenient way to keep silver without holding the physical metal itself. Because the government maintained a reserve of silver dollars specifically for these notes, it was a reliable and trustworthy method for nearly a century. But a prospective decrease in the silver supply ultimately led the U.S. government to halt this program in 1964. Today, silver certificates can be exchanged for cash, though most choose to keep them as collectors items.
