One of the more interesting coins in American history is the Pre-33 $3 Gold Coin. First authorized on February 21, 1853, the coin was designed by James B. Longacre, who served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The $3 Gold Coin was issued for 35 years before its final production in 1889. Today, 1889 Pre-33 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coins in Mint State condition are available from Provident Metals.

  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab!
  • Final issued date in the $3 Indian Princess Series!
  • Declared mintage of only 2,300 coins!

Each 1889 Pre-33 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin you receive will come in a secure plastic slab graded Mint State 63 by PCGS. At this grade level, the coins often display moderate abrasions or light hairlines, and many may show average or slightly weak strikes.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 1889 Pre-33 Indian Princess Coin shows Lady Liberty in a left-facing portrait wearing a feathered crown. Her image is set in the center of the coin with the nations name engraved around her. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1889 $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin, you will see a simple design showing the coins face value and date mark surrounded by a wreath. Inscriptions here include 3 DOLLARS and 1889.

History

The $3 Indian Princess Gold Coin was minted from 1854 through 1889 and was one of the most unusual denominations ever produced by the United States. It was introduced mainly to make it easier to purchase three-cent postage stamps in full sheets. Even so, the odd denomination kept the coin from circulating widely, so examples that remain today are highly desirable among collectors.
