A prominent politician from Minnesota, Windom notably served as secretary under three different presidents: Chester Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, and James Garfield. He also happened to be the great-grandfather of the popular actor on the stage and screen William Windom. In blue ink, you will find the note’s serial number listed twice. Also, you will see the Treasury seal in red ink.

Reverse

The reverse of 1891 $2 Silver Certificates features the denomination and obligation details. The denomination is shown both alphabetically and numerically at several different points on the reverse. History

Silver certificates were issued between 1878 and 1964 and could be redeemed for silver dollars. These notes originated following public outcry over the Fourth Coinage Act of 1873. This controversial act prohibited holders of silver bullion from having their metal minted into coins. As of 1964, these certificates are no longer redeemable for silver and are simply recognized as legal tender that can also be traded in for Federal Reserve notes.
