The San Francisco Mint was founded in 1854 to handle the large amount of gold coming out of the California Gold Rush. Before this, gold had to be shipped to the East Coast or processed by private minters, which was risky and often less profitable. The San Francisco branch allowed local coin production, including the Liberty Double Eagle, which helped support business and growth in the Western U.S. Today, you can find 1891-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins available online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1891-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin offered here is in Extremely Fine condition and ships in a protective plastic flip. XF coins typically display only slight wear on the raised parts of the design, and some examples may still show bits of original luster. These coins are graded around 40 to 45 on the Sheldon scale.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1891-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin shows a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by James B. Longacre, she is pictured wearing a coronet that bears the word Liberty, with 13 stars placed around her image. The 1891 date mark is also engraved on this side.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1891-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin, youll see the Great Seal of the United States. Also the work of Longacre, this design features a heraldic eagle with a shield, arrows, and olive branch. These Type III coins include the national motto added in 1866 and the updated TWENTY DOLLARS denomination used since 1877. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the S mint mark.
History
The Liberty Double Eagles from the San Francisco Mint played a key role in large money exchanges in the growing economy of the West. Their high denomination was useful for major transactions, and their mintages give a glimpse into the financial trends of the time.
