Each 1896 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin here is graded Mint State 63. Coins with this grade have a pleasing eye appeal for their age, with slightly impaired mint luster. You may see several small contact marks, a few heavier marks, and fine hairlines visible without magnification. Each coin comes in a protective plastic slab.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1896 Morgan Dollar Coins features George T. Morgans portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-profile bust draws on classical art, showing Liberty with a coronet crown and a Phrygian cap. Thirteen stars line the bottom half of the field. Inscriptions here read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1896.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1896 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, the design showcases another of Morgans creations, the heraldic eagle. This version depicts a bald eagle in a front-facing pose, holding the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, with a wreath encircling most of the bird’s figure. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

In 1896, the US Mint produced almost 20 million Morgan Silver Dollars. These coins were minted at the Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints, with Philadelphia producing nearly half of the total. Philadelphia struck 9.976 million coins, while New Orleans and San Francisco combined to produce about 9.9 million coins.
