The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic silver coins in U.S. history. First struck in 1878, this design was minted annually until 1904 and made a brief return in 1921. Right now, 1897 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Coins arrive in protective flips or an acrylic tube of 20 coins!
  • 20th issue in the Morgan Dollar Series!
  • Total mintage of 2,822,000 coins at Philadelphia!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content in BU condition.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD), backed by the United States.
  • Obverse displays Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse shows the heraldic eagle.

Each 1897 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Individual coins ship in protective flips, while bulk orders of 20 are housed in acrylic tubes when available. The Morgan Dollar was named after its designer, George T. Morgan, who later became the 7th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1897 Morgan Dollar Coin features Lady Liberty in a left-facing portrait. Designed in 1878 by George T. Morgan, this classic image shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with a coronet crown and laurel wreath, surrounded by 13 stars to represent the original Colonies. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1897.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1897 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, the heraldic eagle design also comes from George T. Morgan. The eagle is presented in a powerful front-facing pose, wings spread, holding the olive branch of peace in one talon and the arrows of war in the other. The inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

In 1897, the Morgan Dollar was produced at three different U.S. Mint facilities: Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco. That year, Philadelphia issued the smallest mintage at 2.822 million coins, with larger quantities produced at the other two mints.
