Obverse

The obverse of the 1898 Morgan Dollar Coin showcases Lady Liberty in a left-facing portrait. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown inscribed with Liberty, and a laurel wreath. Thirteen stars symbolizing the original Colonies surround her image. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1898.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1898 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is the heraldic eagle design by George T. Morgan. The bald eagle is shown with wings outstretched, clutching arrows and an olive branch to represent strength and peace. The inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.

History

The Morgan Dollar series spanned 28 issue dates, including a 17-year pause in production between 1904 and 1921. In 1898, Philadelphia struck 5.884 million coins, contributing to over 15 million Morgan Silver Dollars produced across three mints that year. The New Orleans and San Francisco Mints accounted for the rest of the year’s output, further boosting its availability.
