After the passage of the Fourth Coinage Act in 1863, the United States Treasury made a move to satisfy disgruntled silver enthusiasts by introducing Silver Certificates. The aforementioned act had ended free silver coining in the US, halted production of the silver dollar for several years, and effectively pegged the US on the gold standard. The release of Silver Certificates offered Americans a chance to hold and use paper money that was redeemable for silver dollars if the individual wanted. This collection of paper money ended up churning out some of Americas greatest paper note designs, most of which are considered to be nothing less than works of art. Provident Metals now offers Very Fine-condition 1899 $1 Black Eagle Silver Certificates to you for purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase these 1899 $1 Black Eagle Silver Certificates at Provident Metals, you will receive a note that is more than 120 years old and still in beautiful overall condition. Although you will notice common flaws from use in circulation, such as folds, wrinkles, and worn corners, you will not find major tears, stains, or other impairments that detract from the visual brilliance of the note. Each one retains an impressive level of crispness for its age and has little to no loss of color in the design. Each note will arrive with a protective plastic currency sleeve.
Obverse
The obverse of 1899 Black Eagle Silver Certificates comes with a detailed design showcasing the American bald eagle and two former US Presidents. The bald eagle is perched on a horizontal flagpole, clutching the pole with its talons as the American flag is draped beneath. Behind the eagle, you will find the US Capitol Building. Beneath the eagle, there is a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln to the left and one of President Ulysses S. Grant to the right. The not features various inscriptions, with some of the more important being the serial number and seal of the US Treasury in blue ink.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1899 $1 Black Eagle Silver Certificate is a simplistic design feature. This side includes an ornate border element that includes various notations, such as Silver Certificate and United States of America. The written face value of One is noted in each of the four corners, while the numeric face value is noted as 1 on each side of the central field of the note.
History
1899 Black Eagle Silver Certificates marked the fourth design in the Silver Certificate Series. It remained on the Silver Certificate until 1923 when the familiar portrait of President George Washington was placed on the note.
