The 1899 issue of the $2 Silver Certificate was the last one of this denomination in the series and the only $2 denomination in US history to feature President George Washington. Only printed in the historic large-sized note format, this particular Silver Certificate denomination is a popular choice with collectors of historic US paper notes. Provident Metals now has Very Fine 1899 $2 Silver Certificate Notes available to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you purchase the 1899 $2 Silver Certificate Note in this listing at Provident Metals, you will receive a product that is in Very Fine condition. Notes in this condition have common wear patterns from handling, light-to-mild soiling, and several fold lines. Please remember that all notes are chosen at random. When you buy several, you could get notes with the same wear patterns and conditions, or notes with a mixture of different conditions within the Very Fine range.
Obverse
The obverse of 1899 $2 Silver Certificate Notes comes with a portrait of President George Washington. His effigy is flanked on either side by the allegories of agriculture and mechanics, which are represented by a male and female figure. President Washington has appeared on countless forms of US paper money. He first appeared on the $1 denomination in 1869. This note marks his only appearance on a $2 denomination.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1899 $2 Silver Certificates is a simple, yet ornate design field with the note series, nation of issue, and denomination marked. You will find Silver Certificate printed three times on this side, with United States of America as the notation for the nation of issue. The number 2 appears in all four corners.
History
Silver Certificates bear the signatures of the Register of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the United States on the obverse. This 1899 Series for the $2 Silver Certificate was the last redesign and the notes were canceled in 1928 when the small-sized notes were introduced. No $2 note appeared in that latter series. As such, the 1899 $2 Silver Certificate was printed until 1927 and features 10 different possible signature combinations.
