The Morgan Silver Dollar is a celebrated piece of US coinage history. Though it wasn’t the first or last silver dollar minted, its timeless design and connection to key moments in American history make it one of the most beloved coins. Spanning eras like Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, and the early 20th century, the Morgan Dollar remains a collector favorite. Right now, 1899-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1899-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin is offered in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Individual coins ship in protective flips, while multiples of 20 may arrive in plastic tubes. The New Orleans Mint led the way in mintage that year, producing 12.29 million coins. Other 1899 Morgan Dollar mintages include 2.562 million coins from San Francisco and a modest 330,000 from Philadelphia.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1899-O Morgan Dollar Coin is a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty. She is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom, along with a coronet crown and a laurel wreath resting atop her head. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1899.
Reverse
The reverse side of 1899-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins features George T. Morgans heraldic eagle design. The eagle is depicted in a unique style without the traditional US national shield. With its wings spread wide, the eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, symbolizing strength and diplomacy. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
The year 1899 was a transformative period for the United States. The nation was expanding its influence globally, managing newly acquired territories like Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. Domestically, the trust-busting movement was gaining traction as Americans called for regulations to curb monopolistic practices by major corporations.
