The Double Eagle series was issued by the United States Mint between 1850 and 1933. Throughout its 83 years in circulation, the coin featured different designs, but the Liberty Head design by James B. Longacre became the most prominent. This design was used on the coin for 57 years and is highly regarded in American coin history. Right now, 1899-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These 1899-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are graded as About Uncirculated (AU). This grading means the coins display only minimal signs of wear on the highest points. AU coins are typically graded between AU-50 and AU-58, and they retain much of their original mint luster.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1899-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, you will find the left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. She is depicted wearing a coronet crown, with 13 stars surrounding her portrait to represent the original 13 colonies. The year “1899” is engraved below the portrait. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1899.
Reverse
The reverse of these 1899-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins showcases the Great Seal of the United States. This Type III reverse design shows a bald eagle holding a national shield with arrows of war and an olive branch of peace in its talons. Above the eagle are 13 stars, and below is the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the S mint mark.
History
During the 1890s, both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints were responsible for producing the Liberty Double Eagle coins. San Francisco was the leading mint, with both mints combined producing over 2 million coins each year by the late 1890s. In 1899, the San Francisco Mint produced over 2 million Liberty Double Eagles alone, making it a significant coin issue for that year.
