Morgan Silver Dollars are one of the most famous coins on the collectors’ market, sought after by collectors and investors alike for their storied legacy, large size, beautiful design, and substantial silver contents. The last three qualities made them a popular coin among the settlers, adventurers, and outlaws of the Wild West, and they circulated widely before their numbers began to dwindle, lost to the wear of time or simply being melted down for their silver contents. Surviving Morgan dollars with an uncirculated coin grade are rare: for example, coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1900 have a survival estimate of just 200,000 pieces. The 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is now available from Provident Metals.
The 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin has a PCGS-certified grade of Mint State 63. This means it is an average strike with moderate marks or hairline scratches, as verified by expert appraisal from one of the world’s leading third-party coin grading services. It ships in a secure plastic slab with a label that confirms that grade. Each shipment is fully insured by Provident Metals.
The coin’s obverse side features an effigy of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap. She is accompanied by the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1900,” along with thirteen decorative stars at the rim to represent each of the Union’s founding states.
On the reverse side, a heraldic eagle clutches a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The Philadelphia Mint was the first facility to produce the Morgan Silver Dollar, where the process of striking engraver George T. Morgan’s design was perfected as it was rapidly pushed into large-scale production after a legislative struggle over the coining of silver resulted in a law that mandate the American Treasury purchase millions of dollars worth of silver each month. The resulting coins went into wide circulation and became iconic coinage of the American West in particular. The rarity of uncirculated specimens of this coin in particular has made them valuable both to investors and to truly dedicated collectors as the years have passed.
