A famed coin on the collectors’ market whose story is interwoven with that of the American frontier, the Morgan Silver Dollar was first minted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is known for its visually stunning design, large size, and rich silver content. It was a popular coin in the “Wild West” era of pioneers, prospectors, and outlaws, and was widely circulated over the years as supplies dwindled due to attrition from circulation wear or being melted down for silver. Many of these coins are now famously rare, such as 1900 issued Morgans struck at the Philadelphia Mint and certified with a grade of Mint State 64 on the standard Sheldon scale, with a survival estimate of just under 18,000 coins. Provident Metals offers this 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin for online purchase.
Highlights:
This 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin has a grade of Mint State 64 certified by third-party coin experts at PCGS. It shows attractive visual quality, scattered hairline scratches and contact marks — some in primary focal areas — and an average mint and luster. It comes secured in a plastic slab with a label that confirms its grade, with each shipment fully insured by Provident Metals.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse side features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, along with the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1900.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim represent each of the Union’s founding states.
Reverse
The reverse side features a heraldic eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
During the late 19th century, a complicated legislative struggle over the validity and scale of the American silver coinage led to the creation of a new silver dollar, named after the Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan whose design it featured. The Morgan Silver Dollar was rapidly pushed into circulation to satisfy a law that required the Treasury to buy a certain amount of silver each month, and it went on to become a phenomenon, with particularly rare coins highly valued on the collectors’ market. With only a few thousand surviving pieces, 1900-dated Morgans from the Philadelphia Mint — especially in the quality of a coin like this one — are some of the most prized.
